Fall Maintenance Tips for Your Home

Fall is the perfect time of year to tackle a few Halifax home improvement jobs around the house and prepare your home for winter. Before the chill of winter sets in, use these fall maintenance tips to get your home ship-shape and cozy.

Roof and gutters

Have your roof and gutters inspected before winter sets in. Have any minor leaks repaired and get your gutters cleared out to allow any rain and melting snow that may fall to drain away from your roof and home. Remember to aim the drainage away from your home to prevent damage to your home.

Lawn and garden

Fall is a good time to prune your plants and inspect for any roots that might be growing too close to your home’s foundation. You can also protect your plants with a new layer of mulch and bring in container plants to avoid freezing. Don’t forget to store your lawnmower and garden tools so they’ll be ready in the spring.

Decks and patios

If you have a wooden deck, fall is a good time to add a new coat of waterproof sealant to protect the wood all through the winter. Repair or replace any broken boards, clean the deck with a pressure washer, and apply the sealant per the manufacturer’s instructions.

For stone patios, a thorough cleaning can help keep the stone looking good throughout the winter, though you may have to repeat the process in the spring, especially if you lay salt to prevent ice formation.

Halifax doors and windows

Check your doors and windows for any signs of cracks or other damage. Small cracks should be patched and sealed to prevent energy loss, but if your windows are damaged, you may want to consider having new windows installed to help keep your home cozy all winter long.

If you have old doors, especially old patio doors that are not energy efficient, you may want to consider replacing those, too. The cost of replacing them is almost always less than the long-term savings you’ll see on your heating and cooling costs.
