How to Know When You Need to Replace Your Windows

Just because your old windows aren’t cracked and broken, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be replaced. Halifax windows can take some serious abuse from weather and storms, but how do you know when it’s time to replace them? Here’s what you need to know about deciding when to replace your home’s windows.

How do they perform?

If your windows let in cold or hot air, don’t open or close smoothly, or constantly fog up with condensation between the panels of glass, your windows aren’t doing their job.

  • Windows that let air in and out--while they’re closed--are not energy efficient and could be costing you hundreds of dollars every year in wasted energy.
  • Windows that have condensation between the glass panes could promote mold growth.
  • Windows that don’t open or close properly are security risks. If you had a fire, could you escape through your window? If the answer is ‘no’ (because it doesn’t open), you need new windows.

How do they look?

Are your windows the eyes of your home, or are they an eyesore? Windows whose frames are cracked, peeling, chipped, or otherwise worn out and damaged bring down the value of your property because they reduce the curb appeal. If the damage is strictly cosmetic, you might be able to repair it, but if it’s more severe, you probably want to replace one or more of the windows.

Damage isn’t the only reason you might need to replace your windows. If your home’s windows don’t match the look of the house, it can greatly reduce the resale value of your home. If you plan on selling, or if you just want to make sure you home looks as good as possible, consider getting new windows.

Do you need more security and privacy?

Older windows are not soundproof, nor are they as secure as their modern counterparts. If you live in a busy area, new windows could help you block out the noise of traffic and neighbours. They could also help make your home more secure by making it more difficult for opportunistic burglars to get inside your home, since most modern windows feature locking devices.
