To DIY or Not to DIY

When it comes to home improvement, you may be tempted to tackle all the jobs yourself. After all, thanks to YouTube and the internet, there’s a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. But be careful--’how hard can it be’ can quickly become famous last words. Here’s what you need to consider before you decide whether to tackle your home improvement projects on your own.

Is it worth your time?

Yes, you could spend a month designing a deck, piecing it together, and assembling it yourself. It could be cheaper than paying someone else to do it, but it will most definitely take more time and cost you a lot of frustrations. Big projects like deck installations are time-consuming if you try to tackle them on your own, and if you don’t absolutely know what you’re doing, your results may not be what you’re hoping for.

Paying someone else to do the job may not be more expensive than doing it yourself, especially when contractors can get materials for less than you can. They can get doors, cabinets, and other items for much less than you could, so you could actually pay less to have someone else do a job for you.

Is it dangerous?

Do you have the skills and knowledge to tackle a job? If it involves electricity, heights, or gas lines, you probably know that you’re better off with a professional on the job. But they’re not the only things you want to leave to the pros--think of the damage you could cause if you mess up something like installing a window or trying to repair a pipe. Plumbing DIY disasters could be messy, but if you don’t install a window or door properly, you leave your home vulnerable to thieves and intruders.

Do you know enough to do a good job?

If you don’t want to live with the regret of a job badly done, skip the DIY and get a professional in to tackle the project. You’ll be glad you did when you don’t have to pay to have your original work repaired later on.
